What Is Agentic Commerce? What It Means for Shopify and WooCommerce Stores
Agentic commerce means an AI agent finds, compares and sometimes buys products for a person. Here is how it works, what changes for Shopify and WooCommerce stores, and what to do first.
Agentic commerce is online shopping where an AI agent acts for the buyer. The agent searches, compares products and, with the buyer's approval, can complete the purchase. For a store owner, this means a new kind of visitor: software that reads your product data instead of looking at your design.
How agentic commerce differs from normal online shopping
In normal online shopping, a person opens a browser, types a search, clicks through pages and fills in a checkout form. Every step is manual.
In agentic commerce, the person gives a goal in plain language. For example: "Find a waterproof jacket in size M under 150 euros that arrives within a week." The agent then does the work.
A typical flow has five steps:
- The buyer states a goal and sets limits, such as budget, size or delivery date.
- The agent searches for matching products across many stores.
- The agent compares price, stock, shipping and return terms.
- The agent shows a short list, or picks one item if the buyer allowed it.
- The agent starts checkout and pays, usually only after the buyer confirms.
Steps 2 and 3 already happen today in AI assistants that browse the web. Steps 4 and 5 are newer, and the details depend on the platform and the payment provider.
The building blocks
Agentic commerce is not one product. It is a set of parts that work together.
- Product data. The agent needs clear titles, attributes, prices, stock and policies. This is the base for everything else.
- Tool and data access. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an AI agent call tools and read data from a system. Anthropic created MCP. In December 2025 it was donated to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation.
- Checkout and payment protocols. Protocols such as ACP (OpenAI and Stripe), UCP (Google and Shopify) and AP2 (Google with payment networks) cover how an agent starts a checkout and proves that the buyer agreed to pay.
- Agent-to-agent communication. A2A (Google) describes how agents talk to each other.
In short, MCP handles tool and data access. The checkout protocols handle payment. A separate article in this series compares them in more detail.
What it means for Shopify stores
Shopify is closely tied to this shift. It is a named partner in UCP, and the platform has been adding agent-related features. The exact features, regions and timelines change often, so check Shopify's current documentation and admin announcements before you plan.
For most Shopify merchants, the practical points are these:
- Your product catalog in Shopify admin is the main source an agent will use. Clean data there helps more than any theme change.
- The platform and your payment provider will handle much of the protocol work. You do not need to build checkout integrations yourself.
- You still own the product data, the prices, the stock levels and the policies. Mistakes there will show up in agent answers.
What it means for WooCommerce stores
WooCommerce gives you more control, and more responsibility. You run the store software, the hosting and the plugins.
- Agents can read your public pages and your structured data today. Both are in your hands.
- WooCommerce and the wider WordPress project have been working on MCP-style access. This area is young, so read the official developer documentation for the current state.
- Your payment gateway decides which agent checkout options you can use. Ask your provider what it supports.
- Plugin quality matters. A theme or plugin that hides product details behind JavaScript can make a product hard to read for an agent.
What does not change
Some parts of selling online stay the same, even when an agent does the buying.
- The buyer is still a customer. Consumer law, such as withdrawal rights in the EU, still applies. Check the official texts for your country.
- You still need correct prices, tax and invoices. An agent-made order needs the same VAT handling and the same invoice as any other order.
- You still need to ship the right item on time and handle returns.
- Trust still matters. If your data is wrong, an agent can pass the wrong data on to the buyer very fast.
Is this hype?
Part of it is early. The protocols are new, and the number of stores and buyers who use agent checkout is still small in most markets. We do not have reliable figures, so we will not guess.
But product search through AI assistants is real and growing as a habit. Preparing your data costs little and helps normal search too. That makes it a low-risk investment.
What to do first
You do not need to wait for a final standard. These steps help in any case:
- Check your top 20 products. Does each have a clear title, a full description, a size or material, and a correct price?
- Add product identifiers such as GTIN, brand and SKU where you have them.
- Check that your product pages show structured data (schema.org Product and Offer).
- Make shipping and return terms easy to find on one page, in plain language.
- Keep stock numbers in sync. An agent that sees "in stock" for an empty shelf will lose trust in your store.
- Ask your payment provider and platform which agent checkout options they plan to support.
- Decide how you want to treat AI crawlers in your
robots.txtfile.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to build something to take part in agentic commerce?
Not for the first steps. Good product data, structured data and clear policies help agents read your store. Checkout support will mostly come from your platform and payment provider.
Is agentic commerce the same as chatbots on my site?
No. A chatbot on your site helps visitors who already came to you. Agentic commerce is about an outside agent that acts for the buyer and may never load your homepage.
Will agents buy without asking the person?
That depends on the setup. Most designs ask the buyer to confirm, or to set clear limits first. The protocols exist partly to record what the buyer allowed.
Does this change my invoice duties?
The order still needs a correct invoice under the rules of your country. An agent as the buyer's tool does not remove these duties. Check the official rules or ask your tax adviser.
