How to Prepare a Shopify Store for AI Shopping Agents: A Checklist

A practical checklist for Shopify merchants: clean product data, structured data, feeds, crawler rules, policies and payments, so AI shopping agents can find and understand your products.

To prepare a Shopify store for AI shopping agents, fix your product data first, check your structured data, publish clear policies, and decide how to treat AI crawlers. Then follow Shopify's own announcements for agent checkout. Most of the work is data quality, and it also helps normal search.

This checklist goes from the base to the details. Work through it in order.

1. Clean up product data

Agents compare products by their facts. Weak data means weak results.

Use metafields for attributes

If you have attributes that matter for a buying decision, such as material, fit or compatibility, store them in structured fields, not only in free text. Shopify supports category attributes and custom metafields. Check your theme to confirm they are shown on the page too.

2. Check structured data

Most Shopify themes output Product structured data by default. Do not assume it is complete.

  1. Open a product page and run it through the Schema Markup Validator or Google's Rich Results Test.
  2. Check that Product has name, image, description and offers.
  3. Check that Offer has price, priceCurrency and availability.
  4. Check that the price in the structured data matches the visible price.
  5. If you use an app that adds more JSON-LD, check for duplicate or conflicting Product blocks.

If something is missing, ask your theme developer or review your theme's documentation. Edit theme code only on a copy of the theme.

3. Publish clear policies

An agent will look for shipping and return terms before it recommends a purchase.

Keep the wording plain. Short sentences are easier for both people and software to read.

4. Connect a product feed

A feed is a structured file of your products. Many shopping systems read feeds.

5. Decide how to handle AI crawlers

Your robots.txt file tells crawlers what they may read. Shopify generates a default file, and you can customize it through a theme template named robots.txt.liquid.

  1. List the AI crawlers you know from provider documentation. Names change, so check the official sources.
  2. Decide per crawler: allow or block.
  3. Avoid blocking the parts of your store that you want agents to read, such as product and collection pages.
  4. Keep cart, checkout and account pages blocked, as Shopify does by default.
  5. Review the rules every few months.

6. Keep stock and prices accurate

7. Check your payments and checkout

Agent checkout depends on your platform and payment provider.

8. Prepare the back office

An order from an agent is still an order. It needs the same follow-up.

9. Measure

Do not expect big numbers overnight. Treat this as slow, steady work.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Shopify app for AI shopping agents?

Not for the basics. Clean product data, structured data and clear policies need no extra app. Check Shopify's documentation for agent features that your plan and region support.

Will structured data make AI assistants recommend my products?

It helps them read your products correctly. It does not guarantee a recommendation. Price, reviews, availability and many other factors also matter.

Should I block AI crawlers on my Shopify store?

It depends on your goals. If you want to appear in AI answers, allow the crawlers that serve those answers. If you do not, block them. Review the choice from time to time.

How long does this checklist take?

For a small catalog, a few days. For a large catalog, plan for weeks. Start with your best-selling products.
