llms.txt Explained: Should Your Store Have One?
llms.txt is a proposed markdown file that summarizes a site for AI models. Major search engines have not confirmed that they use it. Here is what it is, what is unproven, and when it is still worth adding.
llms.txt is a proposed convention: a markdown file at /llms.txt that gives AI models a short summary of your site and links to your key pages. Major search engines have not confirmed that they use it to find or rank content. For most stores it is optional, cheap to add, and unlikely to change your visibility on its own.
What is llms.txt?
The idea was proposed in 2024 by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI. The goal is simple. Web pages are full of menus, scripts and ads. A language model has a limited context window and does better with clean text.
An llms.txt file offers a short, curated map of your site in markdown. It sits at the root, so the address is https://yourstore.example/llms.txt.
It is not an official web standard. No standards body owns it. Anyone can publish one, and no one is required to read it.
What goes in the file?
The proposal describes a simple structure:
- An H1 line with the site or project name (required)
- A short summary in a block quote
- Optional paragraphs with more detail
- Sections with
##headings that hold lists of links, each with a short note
Here is a small example for a store:
# Example Store
> Example Store sells handmade ceramics and ships across the EU.
Orders ship in 2 to 4 working days. Returns are free within 30 days.
## Key pages
- [Shipping and returns](https://example.com/shipping): costs, times, return steps
- [Size and care guide](https://example.com/care): how to wash and store ceramics
## Optional
- [About us](https://example.com/about): who makes the products
The "Optional" section has a special meaning in the proposal. It marks links that a tool may skip when it needs a shorter context.
The proposal also suggests that pages can offer a clean markdown version at the same address plus .md. This is a second, separate idea. Few stores do it.
What is proven and what is not
This is the part many articles skip.
What is known:
- The file format is documented and easy to create.
- Some documentation sites and developer tools publish llms.txt files.
- Some AI coding tools and agents can read such files when a user points them at one.
What is not confirmed:
- Major search engines have not confirmed that they use llms.txt to find, rank or cite pages.
- Google has said publicly that it does not need special AI files for its generative search features. A Google representative has also said that no AI system was using the file at the time of that statement.
- We found no public statement from OpenAI, Anthropic or Perplexity that their answer systems read llms.txt when they build answers. This may change, so check current documentation.
So there is no evidence that adding the file raises your chance of a citation. Anyone who promises that is guessing.
Should your store have one?
It depends on your content and your time.
Add one if:
- You have help articles, guides or API docs that a developer or agent may want to read.
- You can create the file in under an hour.
- You treat it as a low-cost experiment and not as a core task.
Skip it, or do it last, if:
- You have not yet fixed basic issues such as blocked crawlers, thin product text or missing shipping information.
- Your site is a small catalog with few text pages.
- You would need to keep the file updated by hand and know you will not.
A good order of work is: crawl access, indexing, answer-first content, structured data, and only then llms.txt.
How to add a file in four steps
- List the 5 to 15 pages that explain your business best. Think shipping, returns, sizing, warranty, contact and top guides.
- Write one plain sentence for each page.
- Save the result as
llms.txtin plain text with markdown syntax. - Upload it so it loads at
/llms.txtin your site root. Open the address in a browser to check it.
On Shopify, the root folder is hard to edit. You may need a redirect from /llms.txt to a page or file you control. On WooCommerce, you can place the file in the web root of your WordPress install. Test the final address, because some themes and caching plugins interfere.
Common mistakes
- Putting every URL in the file. Keep it short and curated.
- Copying marketing text. Use plain facts.
- Letting it go stale. Remove links to pages that no longer exist.
- Blocking the file in
robots.txtby accident. - Expecting traffic. Measure referrals in your analytics before you claim any result.
Frequently asked questions
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. The robots.txt file tells crawlers what they may or may not fetch. The llms.txt file is a summary for models and does not control access. Neither file replaces the other.
Does Google use llms.txt?
Google has not said that it uses llms.txt for Search or its AI features. It has said that site owners do not need special AI files to appear in those features. Treat the file as optional.
Can llms.txt hurt my site?
It is unlikely to cause harm. It is a public text file. Do not list private pages, and do not put secrets or internal URLs in it.
How often should I update it?
Update it when you add or remove key pages, and check it every few months. A short file that is correct is better than a long file that is outdated.
